Learn to scull update

Learn 2 Scull (rescheduled dates for Sept)

We unfortunately had to reschedule the recent Learn2Scull course. But we are pleased to announce that the new dates have been set as 6, 7, 13 & 14 September from 2pm-5pm at the Club, with a swim test and capsize drill on Friday evening 29 August at 6:30 at Queen Anne’s School in Reading.

Places are limited to 12 participants on a first come first served basis. This is not a beginners course so you will need to have completed a Learn 2 Row course or have rowed before – the reason being that we will not be teaching the basics of the rowing stroke, instead we will be focusing on the sculling technique and building your confidence in a sculling boat. The course will be very practical and we will spend as much time on the water as possible. We will look to start off sculling in quads and octupuls progressing to doubles and single scull by the end of the course.

The course costs £125 – this includes access to equipment, the swim test & capsize drill, refreshments and British Rowing membership.

If you would like to join or have any questions then please email Stuart on cowens@visa.com.

Forthcoming events for summer

Boat maintenance dates: Sat 12th July, Sun 10th Aug, Sat 13th Sept.

Open day / bring a friend – morning 19 July

As we will not be holding the regatta this year we have decided to hold an open day on Saturday 19 July in place of the normal club session.

This is a perfect opportunity to bring a friend along for a free taster session and give rowing a go! We will have our coaches and volunteers on hand to provide tuition. The open day will be run from 10am-12pm followed by a BBQ (sausage rolls & refreshments will be on sale).

Fun racing – afternoon 19 July

In the afternoon from 2pm we will be having some fun racing for club members as well as those regatta crews that would like to join us. We will make crews up on the day and will have some fun head to head racing.

If you are a 2012 or 2013 regatta crew and would like to enter then please contact Andy McKenzie at race@goringgapbc.org.uk to let him know you would like to join us.

“Grow your £10” Challenge – fundraising opportunity

If you signed up to the “grow your £10” challenge last year then the 19 July could be a great opportunity to “grow” your £10. Come and sell homemade cake selling cakes/treats for example.

Henley Royal Regatta (2-6 July)

It’s that time of year again and some of the top crews from around the country (and the world) will be racing at the Henley Royal Regatta. Unfortunately, none of our current members will be racing, however, a previous member (Neil McKenzie) will be coxing the Brown Uni crew.

We won’t be arranging a formal gathering, but if you are free then it’s a great day out. Why not take a picnic, enjoy a Pimms and watch some top class rowing. More information at www.hrr.co.uk

OPEN water capsize drill with launch and rope throwing drill. Sunday 7th Sept: Few of us are really secure in this procedure so a great opportunity to get comfortable with the process and if you don’t want to take part then come and watch and learn!

WARGRAVE & SHIPLAKE REGATTA

Friday August 8th 2014 – Saturday August 9th 2014

Each year WARGRAVE & SHIPLAKE  hold one of the largest regattas on the Thames with races for skiffs, punts and canoes.

There are 1000 individual competitors competing in 400 races over two days. The course is around 400 yards, down stream, but still arduous. The boats are traditional in style and heavy.

The regatta is open to everyone. There are events for boys, girls, ladies, gentlemen, mixed and veterans.

GGBC won’t be officially entering any crews but if you and your family or friends fancy entering a crew then please do. They provide regatta training in the weeks leading up to the event.

It’s a great day out for all the family with lots to do (racing, shop, bar and food tent, plus bouncy castles and ice cream vans for the kids).

Tickets are available on the gates (under 5′s get in for free).

If you are interested then please enter. Full details are on their website http://wsregatta.co.uk/

Sunday 27th Round the Island

Just a reminder that this Sunday’s session will include an opportunity to race around the island for those of you with competitive spirits, and a chance to help with some boat maintenance in order to keep our fleet of boats in good working order.
