Forthcoming events for summer
Boat maintenance dates: Sat 12th July, Sun 10th Aug, Sat 13th Sept.
Open day / bring a friend – morning 19 July
As we will not be holding the regatta this year we have decided to hold an open day on Saturday 19 July in place of the normal club session.
This is a perfect opportunity to bring a friend along for a free taster session and give rowing a go! We will have our coaches and volunteers on hand to provide tuition. The open day will be run from 10am-12pm followed by a BBQ (sausage rolls & refreshments will be on sale).
Fun racing – afternoon 19 July
In the afternoon from 2pm we will be having some fun racing for club members as well as those regatta crews that would like to join us. We will make crews up on the day and will have some fun head to head racing.
If you are a 2012 or 2013 regatta crew and would like to enter then please contact Andy McKenzie at race@goringgapbc.org.uk to let him know you would like to join us.
“Grow your £10” Challenge – fundraising opportunity
If you signed up to the “grow your £10” challenge last year then the 19 July could be a great opportunity to “grow” your £10. Come and sell homemade cake selling cakes/treats for example.
Henley Royal Regatta (2-6 July)
It’s that time of year again and some of the top crews from around the country (and the world) will be racing at the Henley Royal Regatta. Unfortunately, none of our current members will be racing, however, a previous member (Neil McKenzie) will be coxing the Brown Uni crew.
We won’t be arranging a formal gathering, but if you are free then it’s a great day out. Why not take a picnic, enjoy a Pimms and watch some top class rowing. More information at www.hrr.co.uk
OPEN water capsize drill with launch and rope throwing drill. Sunday 7th Sept: Few of us are really secure in this procedure so a great opportunity to get comfortable with the process and if you don’t want to take part then come and watch and learn!
Come and look at our new home on Saturday morning!!!
THERE WILL BE NO CLUB SESSION ON THIS SATURDAY MORNING 21ST JUNE.
Instead, Club Members are invited to come along to the new site at Lower Basildon to have a look. You are welcome at any time between 9am and 11am.
Directions – Access to the site is off the A329 between Pangbourne and Streatley. As you exit Lower Basildon in the direction of Streatley (or before you enter the village if coming the other way!!) is a turning to the left (right) called Hook End Lane. Opposite this junction are a set of double gates. This is how you should access the site. I will try to get the gates unlocked for Saturday morning if I can, but they are owned by a third party. If I cannot, just climb over them. You should then turn left and follow the track round and down into a field. Keep going straight across to the other side of the field, turn left at the hedge, and walk down towards the river. Please trust me – it is easier than it sounds.
If I can get the gates unlocked, there will be some parking available along the track to the right. If not, there is also parking across the A329 in Hook End Lane – but obviously take care crossing the road.
Rowing this weekend!
9am on Saturday or 10am on Sunday. The river is
looking good and we should have some sunny spells in the morning, so
make the most of it and come and join us. It’s still quite muddy so
remember your wellies.
A few other reminders…
Saturday 29th March: Social club session. There will be rowing
followed by refreshments and treats. We’ll also be running a Learn 2
Cox session for those of you interested in learning the basics of
coxing. It’s a lot of fun and not as daunting as you might think. We
won’t expect you to cox and eight but will show you the basics and go
through some of the commands i.e. how to get a boat in and out of the
water safely etc, so do join us. Please let me know if you’d like to
join us so that I know how many handbooks to bring down.
Spring Learn 2 Row: starts 12th April. Places are filling up fast but
we do have a few places left. If you or someone you know is
interested in learning how to row then please contact me as soon as
possible. £125 for the course (this included British Rowing
membership). No previous rowing experience required. A fun way to
learn how to row.
Sunday 6th April: Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race. We’ll be gathering
at the Goring Social Club to watch it. The main race starts at 6pm,
but do come along and join us for a pre-race drink and to watch the
Isis & Goldie crews race. 1 High Street, Goring, RG8 9BA. Who will
you be cheering for – light blues or the dark blues?
Membership renewals: You may have received an email from Sue Hughes
to renew your membership. Our membership fees are great value for
money and I’d encourage you to renew as we have some exciting
activities planned for this year as well as the regatta and the
development of our own boathouse.
What next…we have a number of activities planned for this year such
as a Round the Island heads race, social events with other clubs & the
Dolphin Adventure centre, BBQs, rowing up and down stream through the
locks and much, much more.
